Two years ago our organizations brought Carmina Burana to the Helena Civic Center. We are ‘pairing up’ again this year to present a multi-media production in Helena of Joyful Songs of Love. Singers, dancers, lighting, and dramatic costumes will grace the stage of the Helena Civic Center on May 1st (7:30 PM) and 2nd (2:00 PM) through the combined talents and creativity of the Helena Chamber Singers and Premiere Dance Company. The centerpiece of this spring concert will be Cantos Alegres, combining poems (all in Spanish) written by Gabriel Navar with music, composed by Paul Basler, and dance, choreographed by Charlene White of Premiere Dance Company. An interesting and important aspect of Navar's creative work is that each poem has a corresponding painting with the same title. Drama features prominently in Cantos Alegres and text painting abounds, highlighting Navar's beautiful poetry. A common thread moves through all nine poems - that of a love greater than all other loves. Each of the nine movements has a distinctive “sound” and placement in the work. The dancers of the Premiere Dance Company will add an artistic element of dance to this work. Cantos Alegres ends quietly and simply, with a sense of reflection and inner peace. Kevin Mathews will be the featured vocal soloist. Cantos Alegres is written for French Horn and piano. Sherry Linnerooth of Bozeman will be the guest artist on the French Horn and Mark Walker will be featured on the piano. The concert will also include works performed by the Helena Chamber Singers and Les Femmes en Noir (Women in Black). Premiere Dance Company will bring additional variety to the show as they perform dance selections that include The Mission and A Crazy Little Thing Called Love.
